As humans age, secretion of hydrochloric acid naturally decreases.

Some signs of low HCl include: muscle cramps, weak nails, indigestion, candida overgrowth, dry skin, chronic fatigue, and more.

I have found in my practice that many people can greatly benefit from supplementing with HCl.

Here is an easy way to determine how much your body needs:

1) Buy an HCl supplement in TABLET form.

2) Take one tablet on an empty stomach.

3) Wait 5-15 minutes. If you don't feel burning in your stomach, take another tablet.

4) Repeat step 3 until you feel a burning sensation in your stomach.

5) Your perfect dose is the # of tablets taken that caused a burning sensation minus 1.

Example: if you took 5 tablets and then felt the burning sensation, your perfect dose is 4 tablets. I recommend you recheck your dosage every few months or so.

IMPORTANT: AFTER DOING THE DOSAGE TEST ABOVE, EAT A MEAL.

To achieve that, it's important to maintain spinal strength, flexibility, and balance.

Two exercises that are great to reach those goals are Yoga and Swimming. Both are rhythmic and symmetrical, encourage chest expansion and deep breathing, and implement several spinal ranges of motion.

I know it's hard get to a pool with busy schedules and probably even harder to find a heated pool in cold weather, but especially if you have disc problems or other degenerative issues that would benefit from non-weight-bearing exercise, the effort would be worth it.

Yoga can be done at home or in a studio/gym setting. Some of my favorite Yoga DVDs are from Yoga Zone. They have several to choose from and even have some for back pain and other issues. Usually there are two 20 minute sessions on each DVD, which is easy for even the busiest people to fit into their schedule.Dr. Debhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05922273052310627940noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4854496299978773740.post-79786513415774206782013-08-24T18:04:00.001-07:002013-08-24T18:04:21.564-07:00Wet Socks Therapy for FeverFever is a good thing; it mobilizes white blood cells to fight whatever bug is causing you distress. However, if children are sick and mom, dad, and baby need sleep - and can't sleep because baby is cranky - it's nice to have a natural way to lower the fever and make everyone more comfortable.

Here's the method:

Slice organic lemons round-wise.
Soak the child's feet in as hot of water as they can handle for 5 minutes or so.
Wet wool socks (100% cotton is second best) in cold water. Put a few lemon slices in the bottom of the socks. Put the wet/damp socks on baby's feet. Cover the child with blankets to keep their body warm - keep feet out of the blankets. Keep the socks on for 6-8 hours or so.

This technique helps draw the fever out of the body. If you have Young Living Lemon and Peppermint oils, you can also add one drop each to the bottom of the child's feet.Dr. Debhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05922273052310627940noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4854496299978773740.post-31291713754747288022013-06-25T13:42:00.001-07:002013-06-25T13:42:37.383-07:00Your Baby's First Chiropractic AdjustmentMost people would find the title of this article a bit strange because their orientation to going to a chiropractor is for back or neck pain.

As someone who was frequently ill as a child, it would have been nice if my parents knew about the benefits of chiropractic care for children while I was still a baby. It wasn't until I was 16 years old that I got my first adjustment and by then, I had suffered quite a bit. I grew up with asthma, food, animal, and environmental allergies, migraine headaches, and a chronic skin rash. After a few weeks of chiropractic care, my health started to turn around.

After being in the fetal position for so long, newborn spines and limbs can have a bit of a challenge adapting to more elongated positions causing muscle spasms in the neck or back areas. Their heads can also become misshapen during the birth process leading to nursing and focusing issues.

If the mom had drugs during pregnancy or delivery, there are certain subluxation (spinal misalignments that interfere with brain-body communication) patterns that are common. These can lead to reflux, colic, and other digestive system problems.

Babies respond very well to skilled chiropractic adjustments and usually become calm, centered, and relaxed almost immediately. It's important to go to a chiropractor who is experienced in certain infant-adjusting techniques. Usually a friend or midwife is a good referral source.
Dr. Debhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05922273052310627940noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4854496299978773740.post-11841172375202494932013-01-23T04:41:00.002-08:002013-01-23T04:41:39.211-08:00Make your own Raw Milk KefirMaking kefir with fresh raw milk is much superior to buying kefir made from pasteurized, homogenized milk. Here's how:

1) Get some kefir grains from a good source. I often have them to share, so just contact me.
2) When you get them, they will be covered with raw milk.
3) When you receive your first batch, strain the kefir grain/milk mixture through a STAINLESS STEEL strainer into a GLASS bowl. The kefir grains will remain in the strainer and the kefir will drain into the bowl. Throw this first batch of kefir away. You are now ready to start your own personal batch.
4) Using a plastic spoon or rubber spatula (no metal), scoop the kefir grains into a glass jar with a lid. I just use an old pickle jar.
5) Cover the kefir grains with raw milk. How much milk depends upon the amount of kefir grains you have and how fast you want the milk to ferment into kefir. If I sent you your starter batch, you would have received about 2 tbsp. of grains. Pour about 3/4 cup of fresh, raw milk over the grains. (As your grains multiply, you can increase the amount of milk, yielding more kefir per batch).
6) Put the lid on the jar and store the kefir grains in a warm place where they will not be disturbed. In my home, the temperature ranges from about 68-75 degrees. This is warm enough for kefir to ferment in about a day to a day and a half. You will get to know when it is thick enough for you. At that point, put it in the refrigerator for a day or so. The longer it ferments, the thicker it becomes and will start to separate into curds and whey. You can simple stir to blend again, or pour of the whey to use for fermented veggies, etc.
7) Now strain the kefir grain milk mixture as in step three. This time, you keep the kefir to consume! Now, start the whole process over; grains in a glass jar, cover with milk, etc.

You can drink the kefir plain (tastes similar to plain yogurt), mix with fruit or juice or NingXia Red, or mix in a smoothie. Yum!

Your
gallbladder is a small sack that stores bile until needed. Bile is made in the
liver and is used during digestion to emulsify fat. When you eat a meal that
contains fat (like butter, dairy, meats, oils, etc), the gallbladder squeezes
the proper amount of bile into the beginning part of the small intestines. The
bile is mixed with the food so the fat can be broken up into smaller and
smaller particles so that lipase (digestive enzyme that specifically breaks down
fats) can digest the fat and the body can then absorb it.

Bile is an
extraordinary liquid in that it has a very wide range of pH: from about 4-9. It
works best at 7.6, but can have a broader range for your survival. Your body
needs to maintain a slightly alkaline pH to stay healthy and alive. pH stands
for “potential of hydrogen” and is a measurement of how acid or alkaline
something is. The pH scale runs from 0-14, with 7 being neutral. Stomach acid
is very low on the pH scale– about 1-4.5, whereas ammonia is very high – bout
11.

The best way
to maintain your body’s slightly alkaline balance is be eating lots of fruits
and vegetables; especially deeply colored ones. Deeply colored plants,
especially vegetables are full of minerals that you need to give you mineral
reserves for your natural buffering system. The problem is that in our standard
American dietary habits, we don’t consume nearly as many veggies and fruits
that our bodies need for normal health. Our mineral reserves become depleted.

The good
news is that your body is designed with many back-up systems so that if you
don’t eat properly, you can still survive for a certain amount of time. While
you should be getting your alkalizing minerals from the foods you eat, your
body can access your bile to get the alkalizing effect it needs to neutralize
the acidifying residue left behind from meats, grains, soda, candy, chips,
coffee, and all the other goodies ingested. When you eat improperly for too
long, the bile gets out of its normal pH balance and stones form. If your
habits are not corrected, the stones continue to form, eventually leading to an
inflamed gallbladder which you then blame for “attacking” you.

The way to
prevent gallstones and possible gallbladder removal is by eating the food that
God provided for you. The diet best suited for humans should contain around
60-70% fruits and vegetables. More vegetables are better, and ½ of what you
consume should be raw and/or fermented. This will ensure you are getting the
minerals you need to provide your body with the material need to keep you
healthy for many years to come.

If you have
already had your gallbladder removed, your liver still produces bile and there
will just be a steady drip into your intestines. You should not eat too many fatty
foods at any given meal. Trial and error will let you know how much fat at once
is too much for you. Taking digestive enzymes that include lipases is a good
idea. They will ease the digestive burden on your pancreas and help you digest
the fats easier since you might not have sufficient amounts of bile to emulsify
your whole meal. Continuing a high fruit and veggie diet will help prevent your
body from becoming too acid and going to the other back-up systems: your
kidneys, bones, and muscles. But, that’s another post.

Let me explain: health-wise, everything begins with the health of the gut. The gut is your entire gastrointestional system from your mouth all the way down and out. The quality of the food you choose and the health of your gut will determine the health of your entire body.

Some of us begin life pretty well - mom eats pretty well while pregnant with us, she has a natural birth with minimal intervention, breastfeeds us, and feeds us pretty good food. Others start out at a disadvantage. Mom might not have availabilty to good nutrition, maybe there are complications with the pregnancy and/or birth leading to a c-section, and then perhaps she is unable to nurse us.

When babies are born naturally, they swallow the normal, beneficial vaginal bacteria that start a healthy gut environment. These probiotics promote a natural balance of pH and normal gut flora to help with digestion of food, assimilation of nutrients, and immune factors. If that step is bypassed via c-section, then baby's immune system is already at a disadvantage.

Eating fermented foods is a delicious, cost-effective way to inoculate your gastrointestinal tract with the health-promoting, beneficial bacteria you need to obtain proper nutrition and fight off dis-ease. Even if you are on a limited budget and can't afford a probiotic supplement, you can always choose healthier, more nutrient-dense food. Raw milk kefir, miso, kombucha, raw saurkraut and kim chee are just a few examples of delicious ways to get your gut restored so you can continue to build robust health.

I was always quite ill as a child. Ever since I could remember, I had asthma, food allergies, animal allergies, migraine headaches, and a nervous skin rash. My allergies were so bad that if I walked into a house with any type of animal I didn't even need to see it, my eyes would immediately start to swell shut and I would go into an asthma attack. I had an itchy rash by my elbows and behind my knees that was so bad, I would scratch, scratch, scratch till the blood dripped down my legs into my shoes! Oh yea, my "ring" toes used to split open on the bottom. I would often be left out of events with the Girl Scouts because my mom was concerned that my asthma would act up. Many foods caused my mouth to itch and swell. I could go on and on, but I'm sure you get the picture.

When I was 16 years old my dad took me to a chiropractor; not because he knew what one was, but because, as an electrician, he was hired to wire the office of the new chiropractor in town. They got to talking about what kind of doctor this "Doctor of Chiropractic" was and my dad took me in to start care.

This doctor taught me how the nerves of the spine connect my brain to the rest of my body and if there is interference along those pathways, there is dis-ease. If that compromised nerve runs from the brain to the lungs, the lungs won't work right. If that compromised nerve runs from the brain to the adrenal (stress) glands, then my body can't handle stress and balance hormones properly, etc., etc. The chiropractor showed me how I had a scoliosis and that it was interfering with how my body functioned.

I NEVER HAD BACK PAIN! I was just dying!

He also taught be about nutrition and about reflexes on my body that could be stimulated and cleared to help the body work better.

I underwent a series of adjustments and got better and better! The body needs no help in getting and staying healthy; it just needs the interference taken away!

Here I am today helping other people live healthier lives through the art, science, and philosophy of chiropractic. Health comes from Above-Down, Inside-Out.

I have often wondered how different my childhood would have been if my parents would have known about the benefits of chiropractic when I was a baby, instead of a teenager...Dr. Debhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05922273052310627940noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4854496299978773740.post-74948302707650937742011-03-14T07:48:00.000-07:002011-03-14T07:48:34.824-07:00Essentials for Good HealthThere are certain natural laws to follow if we are to maintain our good health. Here are some "Essentials for Health":
1. What you eat:
It is important to eat for that is as close to its natural state as possible. This doesn’t necessarily mean raw, but whole, natural foods with a minimum of preservatives and other additives. Work toward having your diet consist of at least 70% fruits and vegetables. The rest should be whole grains, nuts, seeds, legumes/beans, and lean meats. Snack on fruit and nuts or chopped veggies.
2. What you drink:

When our diets are low in high-water content fruits and vegetables, we need more water. Drink about 2/3 ounce of water per pound of body weight. For most of us, that’s close to a gallon of pure, filtered water daily! Besides water, fresh-squeezed juice and herb teas are good. Mineral water is good and the bubbly kind is a treat. Keep caffeine to a minimum. I won’t even talk about soda.

3. How you sleep:

7-8 hours of sleep is important for nerve and body rest and rejuvenation. Get a pillow that supports your neck alignment.

4. How you exercise:

4-5 days per week is good. Try to do a combo of cardio, stretching and resistance training for at least 30 minutes.

5. What and how you breathe:

No need to mention smoking. Get outside everyday for fresh air. Do deep breathing exercises to improve lymphatic flow and increase lung capacity.

6. What you think:

This is probably more important than all the others combined. How we consistently talk to ourselves is vital to long term health and success. (Proverbs 23:7)

7. Sense of Purpose:

People who have goals and a sense of higher purpose tend to be healthier. Their focus is not as much on their own problems, but on helping others which activates all sorts of positive chemicals and neurotransmitters that activate health and healing.

In my experience of almost 30 years in the natural health profession, #s 6 and 7 are probably the most overlooked and possibly the most important!Dr. Debhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05922273052310627940noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4854496299978773740.post-81614384613562159462011-02-25T08:44:00.000-08:002011-02-25T08:44:59.566-08:00Alternative to ColonoscopyIf you hate colonoscopies, we found FOBTs (fecal occult blood test) to be 5% more accurate(several studies confirm) plus they're FREE & PAINLESS and EASY. Just call YOUR state's cancer society & request they mail it & do it in the privacy of your bathroom then mail back. You can & should do these every year and if 1 comes back positive THEN get your colonoscopy. (some states might charge a small fee, but it's still cheaper than a colonoscopy)Dr. Debhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05922273052310627940noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4854496299978773740.post-80179645700256096722011-01-02T16:10:00.000-08:002011-01-02T17:18:05.811-08:00It's a good time to Detox! The beginning of the year is always a good time to go through a cleanse. Holiday eating and New Year's resolutions are a good reason to detoxify your system. There are many Natural Health Care Practitioners, including Jeffrey Bland, Richard Schultz, Danny Viera, Bernard Jensen, Herbert Shelton, etc., who say that about 80% of their patients improve significantly just by doing a good bowel cleanse. That's powerful!

There are many systems in the body to detox, the top two being the bowel and liver. Another "popular" cleanse is for the gallbladder. It is also a good idea for some, if not most, to go through a kidney and lymphatic detoxification as well.

For all my patients, I do specific questionnaires and some tests to see which cleanse(s) are appropriate for them. I will focus on the bowel, or intestinal, liver, and gallbladder cleanses in this post.

It's always best to start with a bowel cleanse because the intestines must be moving properly so that any toxins that are released with subsequent cleanses can be pushed out rapidly. This decreases the chances of any severe "detox reactions" from reabsorbing the cellular toxins that are released. Also, if the intestines are impacted or coated with fecal material, you won't be able to absorb all the good nutrients from the detox supplements.

Most people can do very well with a mild bowel cleanse that has such ingredients as psyllium, cascara sagrada, garlic, barley grass, cape aloe, probiotics, and the like. I usually start out with a product I sell call AlkaCleanse. It is mild, yet very effective, and lasts only 5-7 days. Also, it is properly processed so it is alkalinizing to the body; an absolute must. During this phase it is important to eliminate dairy, red meat, processed foods, and eat plenty of whole grains, fruits, and vegetables. Choose organic as much as possible.

Now that the bowels are cleansed and moving well, the liver cleanse would usually be next. Again, depending on the patients needs, everyone gets a specific protocol of supplements. I like to use the UltraClear line of medical foods because they have products specific for different body types. Not all bodies detoxify the same, and it is important to specify nutritional insufficiencies and needs. In addition to the UltraClear drink, probiotics, milk thistle, green grasses, and other nutrients are used. Again, there is a specific food program to follow, and it is a bit more restricted than the bowel cleanse. Liver cleanses last from 10 - 28 days.

For the gallbladder cleanse, you can refer back to the post on 4/11/10. This is a good one and pretty easy to do because it is the shortest and least restricted.

During all these cleanses, I like patients to use Pure Radiance Enhanced Water. It helps alkalize the system and assists in super-absorption of the nutrients from the supplements.
While this is true, it is of only minimal effect. Spinach is second only to kale in its ORAC value of antioxident activity and has amazing healing and health building effects. It also has great anti-inflammatory and anti-cancer activity.

Baby spinach leaves is best if you want to eat a raw salad. The leaves are more delicate. When cooking spinach, boil or steam for no more than a minute. This help activate the phytonutrients while not killing all the good stuff. Toss with a touch of good olive oil or raw butter to help absorb the fat soluable vitamins A and K. I also like to add a splash of raw apple cider vinegar or lemon juice!

Enjoy!Dr. Debhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05922273052310627940noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4854496299978773740.post-9156361991641261872010-11-30T04:59:00.000-08:002010-11-30T04:59:16.314-08:00ResveratrolResveratrol has been in the news for quite some time. It has very potent antioxident properties to help our bodies fight off the damaging free radicals formed by our stressful, chemical-laden lives. It also has mild phytoestrogen activities and can help the obese. Raspberries, grapes, cranberries, peanuts, blueberries, mulberries, bilberries, and lingonberries all have high amounts of resveratrol.

Phytochemicals are substances in plants to help protect them from their environment; internally and externally. So, they are helpful for us, too.

One easy way to get more phytochemicals, like resveratrol, in our diets is to make "green drinks". My patients have heard me talk about green drinks for years, and my own kids ask for them. Here is a simple recipe:

2 cups pure water OR 1 cup pure water and 1 cup good, pure fruit juice
2 handfuls organic baby lettuce leaves
1 cup frozen berries
1 tbsp organic yogurt (optional)

Blend in a blender and share with a friend or loved one! I also add liquid trace minerals, probiotics, and sometimes a scoop of superfood powder like barley grass, etc. Yum!Dr. Debhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05922273052310627940noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4854496299978773740.post-63464470490222170422010-11-22T04:32:00.000-08:002010-11-22T04:32:01.537-08:00Talkin' TurkeyThanksgiving is coming up and many of us Americans stick with tradition and roast a turkey as the main dish. Turkey is not only yummy, but brings with it many health benefits.

Since most of its fat is in the skin, a serving of turkey meat without the skin is very low in fat. That's the reason why it is best to roast the turkey in the skin; so that the juices can stay in the meat. That's also why, if left out, turkey meat drys out so fast. Ground turkey can be substituted in any recipe that calls for ground beef. Just know that you might want to brown it using a bit of no-fat or low-fat chicken broth, or maybe EVOO so that it is not so dry.

Turkey is very high in selenium, a mineral used in your body's production of T3, the most active form of thyroid hormone. Compared to beef, turkey is much less likely to form N-nitroso compounds in the large intestine. These compounds have been associated with an increased risk of colon cancer. Turkey also is high in some of the B vitamins, which are important for overal energy production. The high protein content in turkey has been compared to egg whites and tuna, two of the best sources of protein.

The pictures in the email showed 2 of the same type and sized plants. One had been watered with the microwaved water and the other with the stove water. After several days ( forget the time frame), the pictures showed the microwave-water plant all shriveled and dying. The text in the email claimed that the microwave killed the water or something like that.

My friend asked me what I thought and I just happened to have access to 2 similar-sized tomato plant seedlings. (Thanks Tammy!) I said, "I don't know, but let's find out!"

I took the plants to my friend Linda's house and began the experiment. I did actually take pictures and send them to my first friend about every 2-4 days.

After almost 2 weeks, the plants were both thriving and ready to be transplanted into larger pots!

So, I'm concluding that water boiled in a microwave and cooled down is just as good to water plants with as water boiled on the stove. I don't know what else it means, but the plants both did well.Dr. Debhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05922273052310627940noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4854496299978773740.post-614864378478024142010-07-13T16:01:00.000-07:002010-07-14T05:46:36.622-07:00Still Not Stinkin' After Almost A Year! Some of you might remember when I switched over from store-bought antiperspirant to plain ol' baking soda. I did it as kind of an experiment because, in my experience, I had never found a "natural" deodorant to work for me. It has always been important to me to go as natural as possible, within reason. I really had wanted to use something less toxic under my arms than the commercial options, but it is also important for me not to offend you, my friends and patients, especially when I was wanting you to r-e-l-a-x while I was adjusting you. How could you, after all, if I had b.o.?
I figured that late Spring/early Summer in CA would be a good test, but, let me tell you: Summer in OK definitely puts the baking soda to the challenge. Most of you know by now that I moved here in Early July. I have been here for over a week in sweltering heat with high humidity. Even when working in our new house, with no A/C because we don't have electricity yet, my pits are still odor-free. I am drenched from head-to-toe, but no b.o.!

I think it was a good decision for me, and I am happy to decrease my toxic load in one more small way!
Dr. Debhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05922273052310627940noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4854496299978773740.post-58520530784465136862010-07-13T05:35:00.000-07:002010-07-13T05:35:45.599-07:00Dioxins and Plastic BottlesI had heard that leaving your plastic water bottles in direct sunlight leaches toxic chemicals out into the water. But, now I see just leaving the water in a hot car, whether or not it's in direct sunlight, leaches dioxin into the water, a chemical found increasingly in breast cancer cells. Dioxin is also the chemical found in bleached paper products.

Many have heard of these solutions, but they are worth repeating:

1) Don't buy water in plastic bottles. Federal Law requires the water to be boiling when putting the water into the bottle which already starts the chemical-leaching process.

2) Buy your own BPE-free water containers and purchase water from a water store.

3) Carry your water in a stainless-steel, glass, or a BPE-free container and don't leave it in a hot car.

4) Don't freeze water in plastic bottles. Freezing also allows dioxin to be released into the water as it thaws.

5) Don't microwave in plastic, styrofoam, or cardboard containers. Put food into a glass bowl or on a glass plate to cook or reheat. You just don't know what's in those containers.

6) Buy a raised microwave plate cover to place over your food in the microwave when using. If you cover the plate with plastic wrap or paper towel, don't it touch the food.

Going on a detoxification program from time to time is a good way to decrease your body's toxic load!Dr. Debhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05922273052310627940noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4854496299978773740.post-45156388781354363382010-07-11T05:45:00.000-07:002010-07-11T05:46:06.449-07:00Simple, yet Powerful Health TipsGood health is often the result of not interfering with the natural flow of life. God designed us to be healthy and self-healing. It's when we interfere with the life-force that naturally occurs from Above-Down-Inside-Out that health issues can occur. The more interference you can detect and eliminate, the better your life-force will flow.

In Chiropractic Philosophy, we are taught about three intelligences: Universal Intelligence (some people call this God), Innate Intelligence (the life-force within each of us, some people call this the Holy Spirit), and Educated Intelligence. You can override Universal or Innate Intelligence with your Educated Intelligence. Your inner voice might tell you, "You'd be better off with less caffeine" or "How about replacing some of those Twinkies with some fruit?". You can either listen and obey or rationalize your behavior and drown out that voice.

Anyway, this is a subject that is an ongoing discussion and better dealt with on my other blog:
thewordonhealth.blogspot.com The purpose of this blog is to give you physical health tips. Although, most of us know that you cannot separate Spirit-Soul-Body.

Here are some great health tips that are simple, but powerful when applied consistently:

1) Charlotte Gerson (she runs a Natural Healing Institute for cancer in Mexico) says that it's much easier to prevent cancer than to heal it. Include many live/raw foods each day that have all the live, disease-fighting enzymes in them. Lots of fresh fruit and veggies, miso soup, probiotics, etc. She said that white flour can't even sustain life for the lowly maggot! Eat whole grains, especially sprouted!

2) We are a nation of constipation. Most medical doctors will tell you that 3-5 BMs per week is normal. Most natural healthcare practitioners way 2-3 per day! Eat a diet high in vegetable matter and good, clean water. Start your day off with a cup of warm water with fresh squeezed lemon juice. If taken on an empty stomach, it will go directly to the large intestines and stimulate peristalsis - the natural wave-like motion of the intestines. It also gets the liver cleansing!

3) 2 drops of castor oil in the eye each morning can help dissolve catarracts!

4) Regular exercise, clean water, good rest, sunshine, temperance, fresh air, good nutrition, and trust in God all work together to create healing miracles!

5) Essiac tea is Canada's #1 cancer cure!

6) Check out my earlier post about doing a gallbladder cleanse.

More to come!Dr. Debhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05922273052310627940noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4854496299978773740.post-14769706849314529292010-06-22T09:06:00.000-07:002010-06-22T09:06:48.369-07:00More good news about Vitamin DVitamin D has really been in the news lately. It helps with much more than just strong bones. There were a couple more studies that I read recently that I found interesting...

One was done in Canada and found that with adequate Vitamin D levels, there was a reduction in the risk for breast cancer! Vitamin D Supplements and Breast Cancer Risk Reduction

The other article talked about taking a Vitamin D supplement instead of the flu vaccine to decrease the risk of getting the flu. It was effective and non-toxic! Now that's what I like to hear. Vitamin D Boosts Immunity against Flu

If you do take a supplement, take it in the Vitamin D3 form. Common dosages are between 400 - 5,000 I.U.s per day

We all know that prudent sun exposure is good for our health. Be wise about it. Don't get burned, wear a hat, use a non-toxic, non-nanoparticle sunblock and have a good time!Dr. Debhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05922273052310627940noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4854496299978773740.post-14338510738030776302010-05-28T09:00:00.000-07:002010-05-28T09:00:14.812-07:00PesticidesWe all know that it is best to avoid pesticides, but it is not always possible. Fortunately, there are some commercially grown fruits and veggies that tend to have lower amounts of chemicals adhering to their surface. The more you consume from the "Clean" list, and the fewer you consume from the "Dirty" list, the lower your toxic load will be. Here are the lists:

DIRTY DOZEN - buy these organic:
celery, peaches, strawberries, apples, blueberries, nectarines, bell peppers, spinach, kale, cherries, potatoes, imported grapes

CLEAN 15 - lowest in pesticides:
onions, avocadoes, sweet corn, pineapple, mangos, sweet peas, asparagus, kiwi, cabbage, dggplant, cantaloupe, watermelon, grapefruit, sweet potato, honeydew melon.

It's best to buy organic, pesticide, sustainable agriculture, or biodynamic whenever possible. But, it's also good to know what the best choices are when those aren't available.

Eat healthy!Dr. Debhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05922273052310627940noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4854496299978773740.post-59051728913009084202010-04-28T07:01:00.000-07:002010-04-28T07:01:29.129-07:00Cherry Picking Season is Almost Here!If you love fresh cherries, have I got the tip for you! For the past several years, my family and I have gone cherry picking. It's a lot of fun and it's easy to get to. The place we love is Villa del Sol. It is just a few miles off the 14 freeway. Go north towards Palmdale and exit Palmdale Blvd. Make a left and go about 5 or so miles. It will be on the right hand side.

The people there are really friendly and you can eat as many cherries you want without paying. The cherries are never sprayed with bad stuff so you can just dust them off and pop them in your mouth.

Picking cherries is fun! Just make sure you PICK ONLY THE FRUIT - LEAVE THE STEM ON THE BRANCH! If you pick the stem, no cherry will grow in that spot next season. You can also cut the stem in half to harvest the fruit, but it's easy just to pick. Be forewarned, though! Picking is fun and you can easily get carried away. You must pay for all cherries you pick and plunk in the bucket they provide for you. Each inch or so in the bucket is about a pound, and it can add up quickly!

It acts as a hormone that enhances the absorption of calcium and phosphorus in the small intestine.

Inadequate blood levels of Vitamin D can lead to osteoporosis because it reduces calcium absorption.
There is evidence that it also blocks growth and differentiation of cancer cells. Vitamin D has also shown to be influencial in helping autoimmune conditions.

Look at all the conditions Vitamin D is helpful in:
Osteoporosis prevention and treatment
Cancer prevention
Diabetes prevention
Polycystic ovary disease
Depression and other mood disorders
Gum disease prevention
Psoriasis
Seasonal Affective Disorder
Fibromyalgia
Immune Function

In our lifestyles of going from the "cage to the cave" (home to office or vice versa), we don't get outdoors enough to enjoy the sunshine. Top that with improper use of sunscreens/sunblocks and we really have a problem. I have seen low blood levels of Vitamin D in several of my patients.

Correcting the problem is easy; get out more and enjoy HEALTHY sun exposure. Take Vitamin D supplements. They are very inexpensive. Make sure you get them in the D3 form.
This gives you a good baseline density level before perimenopause starts to set in. Most DEXA scans come with easy-to-read graph reports. Even if you forget what the doctor said, you can refer back to the graph and see the results.

In case your report is not so user-friendly, here is a chart that shows how to read the scores. Where ever you are on the list, make sure you discuss with your doctor the appropriate diet, lifestyle, and supplement changes you need to make to ensure strong bones for life!

There was a study done on 10 randomly selected products from a health food store. The levels of PCBs found ranged from very low to amounts high enough to caus concern. Now there is a lawsuit filed against CVS, GNC, Now Health, Omega Protein, Pharmavite, Rite Aid, Solgar, and Twin Lab due to their high concentrations of contaminants. Remember that these products were randomly selected for testing, so there could be other companies that are contaminated.

There is an "acceptable" upper limit for PCBs in fish oil: .09 ppm. Unfortunately, since we do live in a toxic world, it is nearly impossible to remove all the contaminants. I have always said to make sure you know where your supplements are sourced from and how they are processed. The two brands of fish oil I have recommended are Metagenics and Nordic Naturals. They are both made in small batches and have high turnover, which means they aren't sitting on a shelf somewhere for a long time. Also, Metagenics will not ship on a Thursday or Friday to make sure the oils aren't sitting somewhere over the weekend in the heat! That's quality control!Dr. Debhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05922273052310627940noreply@blogger.com2
