My Chiropractic Story

I realized that, as I meet new friends, maybe some of you have never heard my amazing Chiropractic "miracle" story!

I was always quite ill as a child. Ever since I could remember, I had asthma, food allergies, animal allergies, migraine headaches, and a nervous skin rash. My allergies were so bad that if I walked into a house with any type of animal I didn't even need to see it, my eyes would immediately start to swell shut and I would go into an asthma attack. I had an itchy rash by my elbows and behind my knees that was so bad, I would scratch, scratch, scratch till the blood dripped down my legs into my shoes! Oh yea, my "ring" toes used to split open on the bottom. I would often be left out of events with the Girl Scouts because my mom was concerned that my asthma would act up. Many foods caused my mouth to itch and swell. I could go on and on, but I'm sure you get the picture.

When I was 16 years old my dad took me to a chiropractor; not because he knew what one was, but because, as an electrician, he was hired to wire the office of the new chiropractor in town. They got to talking about what kind of doctor this "Doctor of Chiropractic" was and my dad took me in to start care.

This doctor taught me how the nerves of the spine connect my brain to the rest of my body and if there is interference along those pathways, there is dis-ease. If that compromised nerve runs from the brain to the lungs, the lungs won't work right. If that compromised nerve runs from the brain to the adrenal (stress) glands, then my body can't handle stress and balance hormones properly, etc., etc. The chiropractor showed me how I had a scoliosis and that it was interfering with how my body functioned.

I NEVER HAD BACK PAIN! I was just dying!

He also taught be about nutrition and about reflexes on my body that could be stimulated and cleared to help the body work better.

I underwent a series of adjustments and got better and better! The body needs no help in getting and staying healthy; it just needs the interference taken away!

Here I am today helping other people live healthier lives through the art, science, and philosophy of chiropractic. Health comes from Above-Down, Inside-Out.

I have often wondered how different my childhood would have been if my parents would have known about the benefits of chiropractic when I was a baby, instead of a teenager...

Essentials for Good Health

There are certain natural laws to follow if we are to maintain our good health. Here are some "Essentials for Health":
1. What you eat:
It is important to eat for that is as close to its natural state as possible. This doesn’t necessarily mean raw, but whole, natural foods with a minimum of preservatives and other additives. Work toward having your diet consist of at least 70% fruits and vegetables. The rest should be whole grains, nuts, seeds, legumes/beans, and lean meats. Snack on fruit and nuts or chopped veggies.
2. What you drink:

When our diets are low in high-water content fruits and vegetables, we need more water. Drink about 2/3 ounce of water per pound of body weight. For most of us, that’s close to a gallon of pure, filtered water daily! Besides water, fresh-squeezed juice and herb teas are good. Mineral water is good and the bubbly kind is a treat. Keep caffeine to a minimum. I won’t even talk about soda.

3. How you sleep:

7-8 hours of sleep is important for nerve and body rest and rejuvenation. Get a pillow that supports your neck alignment.

4. How you exercise:

4-5 days per week is good. Try to do a combo of cardio, stretching and resistance training for at least 30 minutes.

5. What and how you breathe:

No need to mention smoking. Get outside everyday for fresh air. Do deep breathing exercises to improve lymphatic flow and increase lung capacity.

6. What you think:

This is probably more important than all the others combined. How we consistently talk to ourselves is vital to long term health and success. (Proverbs 23:7)

7. Sense of Purpose:

People who have goals and a sense of higher purpose tend to be healthier. Their focus is not as much on their own problems, but on helping others which activates all sorts of positive chemicals and neurotransmitters that activate health and healing.

In my experience of almost 30 years in the natural health profession, #s 6 and 7 are probably the most overlooked and possibly the most important!

Alternative to Colonoscopy

If you hate colonoscopies, we found FOBTs (fecal occult blood test) to be 5% more accurate(several studies confirm) plus they're FREE & PAINLESS and EASY. Just call YOUR state's cancer society & request they mail it & do it in the privacy of your bathroom then mail back. You can & should do these every year and if 1 comes back positive THEN get your colonoscopy. (some states might charge a small fee, but it's still cheaper than a colonoscopy)

It's a good time to Detox!

The beginning of the year is always a good time to go through a cleanse. Holiday eating and New Year's resolutions are a good reason to detoxify your system. There are many Natural Health Care Practitioners, including Jeffrey Bland, Richard Schultz, Danny Viera, Bernard Jensen, Herbert Shelton, etc., who say that about 80% of their patients improve significantly just by doing a good bowel cleanse. That's powerful!

There are many systems in the body to detox, the top two being the bowel and liver. Another "popular" cleanse is for the gallbladder. It is also a good idea for some, if not most, to go through a kidney and lymphatic detoxification as well.

For all my patients, I do specific questionnaires and some tests to see which cleanse(s) are appropriate for them. I will focus on the bowel, or intestinal, liver, and gallbladder cleanses in this post.

It's always best to start with a bowel cleanse because the intestines must be moving properly so that any toxins that are released with subsequent cleanses can be pushed out rapidly. This decreases the chances of any severe "detox reactions" from reabsorbing the cellular toxins that are released. Also, if the intestines are impacted or coated with fecal material, you won't be able to absorb all the good nutrients from the detox supplements.

Most people can do very well with a mild bowel cleanse that has such ingredients as psyllium, cascara sagrada, garlic, barley grass, cape aloe, probiotics, and the like. I usually start out with a product I sell call AlkaCleanse. It is mild, yet very effective, and lasts only 5-7 days. Also, it is properly processed so it is alkalinizing to the body; an absolute must. During this phase it is important to eliminate dairy, red meat, processed foods, and eat plenty of whole grains, fruits, and vegetables. Choose organic as much as possible.

Now that the bowels are cleansed and moving well, the liver cleanse would usually be next. Again, depending on the patients needs, everyone gets a specific protocol of supplements. I like to use the UltraClear line of medical foods because they have products specific for different body types. Not all bodies detoxify the same, and it is important to specify nutritional insufficiencies and needs. In addition to the UltraClear drink, probiotics, milk thistle, green grasses, and other nutrients are used. Again, there is a specific food program to follow, and it is a bit more restricted than the bowel cleanse. Liver cleanses last from 10 - 28 days.

For the gallbladder cleanse, you can refer back to the post on 4/11/10. This is a good one and pretty easy to do because it is the shortest and least restricted.

During all these cleanses, I like patients to use Pure Radiance Enhanced Water. It helps alkalize the system and assists in super-absorption of the nutrients from the supplements.
